UNSOS Trains Somali Security Forces on Advanced Communication Systems

Mogadishu, Somalia, August 5, 2024 — In the midst of intensified operations against Al-Shabaab, Somali Security Forces (SSF) are now better equipped to communicate and coordinate their missions, thanks to a recent training initiative. The United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) has organized a five-day intensive course on Motorola networking essentials for 20 selected Somali security personnel, including members of the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) and Somali Police Force (SPF).

Private Hassan Khalif Ali Abdi of SNAF highlighted the critical role of the new two-way handheld radios in ensuring effective communication and troop coordination during operations. “Communication technologies are advancing daily, and we need to be updated on the latest advancements,” he noted.

The training, conducted by UNSOS’s Field Technology Section, aims to enhance the technical capacity of SSF to install, commission, and maintain these advanced communication systems independently. Paul Gimsay, Chief of UNSOS-FTS, emphasized that the hands-on training covered key concepts and practical mentoring on Motorola communication systems, preparing SSF to operate efficiently in Mogadishu and other sectors using MOTOTRBO radios.

Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhyadin, Chief of Defence Forces for Somalia, expressed gratitude for UNSOS’s support, stating, “The training and equipping of the Somali Security Forces has enabled and improved the working conditions and interoperability between the army and police.”

Brigadier General Sulub Ahmed Firin, Somali Police Commissioner, highlighted the crucial role of communication in military operations. He acknowledged that the training and new equipment would significantly enhance the coordination and effectiveness of their offensives against Al-Shabaab.

Participant Hassan Muhidin Mohamed, a Chief Inspector in the Somali Police Force, shared his appreciation, stating that the training has equipped him with essential skills for troubleshooting Motorola communication equipment, which is vital for continuous security operations.

UNSOS Director of Mission Support, Qurat Ul-Ain Sadozai, noted that communication is at the heart of all offensive operations. Since 2019, over 400 Somali security personnel have received training in various ICT disciplines, including radio frequency management and interoperability, through UNSOS initiatives.

The Motorola communications equipment, funded through the UNSOS-administered Somali Trust Fund, is part of the non-lethal logistical support provided to 20,900 Somali security personnel engaged in joint operations with African Union forces.
