It’s Showtime: A Celebration of Creativity and Inclusivity

Durban, South Africa – The 48 Hour Film Project Durban is thrilled to announce the successful production of over 100 short films during this year’s international filmmaking extravaganza. This ultimate filmmaking experience challenges filmmakers to create an impromptu short film over the course of just one weekend, showcasing incredible talent, creativity, and diversity.

This year’s submissions covered a wide array of topics and genres, from a powerful film titled “Unheard and Unseen,” created by a mute team using sign language, to films addressing mental health, human trafficking, and LGBTQ+ issues. The festival also highlighted unique productions, such as a film created by a grade 7 student who wrote, shot, and edited her own work, as well as female superhero films and mobile filmmaking projects. Participation from TAFTA (The Association for the Aged) further emphasized the festival’s commitment to inclusivity and age diversity.

Participants hailed from across KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Lesotho, Nigeria, and Ukraine, reflecting the growing reach and inclusivity of the Durban chapter. City producer Nerusha Maharaj Sadapal expressed her excitement about this year’s success, inviting the public to support local filmmakers by attending the screenings.

The screenings will culminate in an Awards Ceremony, where over 30 local awards will be presented to filmmakers. The overall winner will represent Durban internationally, competing against 130 other city winners. The top 10 films will also be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
