19 June, 2025. Durban, South Africa – In a significant stride towards future-focused education and innovation, the Durban University of Technology (DUT), in partnership with the Moses Kotane Research Institute (MKRI) and the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (MerSETA), will unveil a cutting-edge Smart Robotics Lab at its Ritson Campus on Tuesday, 24 June 2025.
This pioneering initiative marks a bold step in positioning KwaZulu-Natal as a leading hub for robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and smart manufacturing in South Africa. The Smart Robotics Lab is designed not only to drive 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution)-aligned research and development but also to equip students, academics, and industry professionals with world-class skills and knowledge.
“The launch of this lab represents more than just a physical space,” said DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu. “It is an investment in the future of our youth and in the technological transformation of our economy. This partnership is a reflection of our shared vision for innovation, inclusivity, and economic growth driven by homegrown talent.”
The event will bring together influential voices from government, academia, industry and civil society, creating a unique platform to explore the transformative role of smart technologies in education, economic revitalisation, and youth empowerment. Key representatives from DUT, MKRI, MerSETA and other partners will be present, alongside students and emerging researchers who stand to benefit directly from this groundbreaking facility.
The Smart Robotics Lab will serve as a launchpad for new ideas and prototypes, empowering young innovators to solve real-world challenges while fostering collaboration between public and private sectors.
