Durban, South Africa – The much-anticipated 48-Hour International Short Film competition officially launched in Durban at the Film and Publication Board offices in Musgrave, setting the tone for an exciting filmmaking season. Dignitaries, seasoned filmmakers, and emerging talents gathered for the event, which was graced by special guest Her Worship, Mrs. Fawzia Peer, former Deputy Mayor of eThekwini, showing strong support for the initiative.
The launch event was led by Sureka Soni, a past contender of the 48-Hour Film Project, and included a diverse group of participants eager to dive into the exhilarating creative opportunities offered by the project. The day’s festivities began with a stunning musical performance by Andiswa Khanyile, captivating the audience and setting the perfect mood for the launch.
City Manager of the 48-Hour Film Project, Nerusha Maharaj-Sadapal, shared her excitement about this year’s challenge, saying, “Today, we’re excited to introduce the 48-Hour Film Project, a cinematic challenge that’s making history in Durban! Over one weekend, we’ll be making 100 short films, each created in just 48 hours. It’s a groundbreaking achievement, and we’re thrilled that you’re here to be a part of it!”

She further elaborated on how filmmakers can enter the competition, outlining the rules and emphasizing the incredible rewards. The films will have a chance to be screened at Filmapalooza 2024 and potentially at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2025. Filmmakers must use a character, prop, line of dialogue, and two genres within their seven-minute films, offering a thrilling test of creativity.
The launch was supported by key partners including the Durban Film Office, Economic Development Department, National Film and Video Foundation, Panavision, Panalux, Creative Arts College, VR Films, and the Umlazi International Film Festival. Fezile Peko from the Durban Film Office expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting the significance of the initiative for nurturing local talent.
Renowned actress Luyanda Zwane, famous for her roles in Sbongile & Dlamini’s and Shaka Ilembe, made a special appearance, sharing her personal journey in the entertainment industry and inspiring aspiring filmmakers and actors to seize this incredible opportunity.

With entries still open, filmmakers across the globe are encouraged to sign up and compete for a chance to have their films screened at Suncoast Casino, with 25 local awards on offer.
