Date: 01 July 2025
The Moses Kotane Research Institute (MKRI), in partnership with the Department of Information and Corporate Management (ICM) at the Durban University of Technology, will host a high-level Business Breakfast in collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA).
This engagement will allow attendees to propose strategies for addressing some of the province’s most pressing challenges, such as the skills gap and consistently high youth unemployment rate. The Business Breakfast aims to foster robust dialogue on bridging the divide between academic institutions and industry needs.
Key topics will include:
• Industry-based skills training using transformative education models
• Strategies to bridge the gap between university qualifications and labour market demands
• Policy-driven approaches to reducing youth unemployment
• Summary submissions on impactful interventions to enhance employability among KZN youth
Over 120 influential leaders from government, academia, business, labour and civil society will gather to contribute insights and solutions.
The KwaZulu -Natal MEC for EDTEA, Reverend Musa Zondi, will deliver the keynote address, focusing on the importance of skills research and bridging the gap between academia and industry, as well as the production of skills required by industry for economic development
MKRI will also showcase its ongoing research and programme initiatives aligned with skills development, job creation, and community upliftment. The platform will serve to position the MKRI Campus and DUT’s ICM Department as vital hubs for progressive academic and development-oriented engagement.
